Abstract

Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic infectious granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. The disease mainly affects peripheral nervous system, the skin and other tissues. It is a spectral disease which is classified into five groups based on clinical, histopathological and bacteriological and immunological criteria as tuberculoid (TT), borderline tuberculoid (BT), mid-borderline (BB), borderline lepromatous (BL), lepromatous (LL) according to Ridley-Jopling classification. Aims and Objectives were 1) a) To describe clinical findings in various subtype of leprosy. b) To describe histopathological findings in various subtypes of leprosy. c) To describe Microbiological findings. 2) To correlate clinicopathological and microbiological findings in cases of leprosy. Methods: A data analysis of 75 skin biopsies diagnosed as leprosy over a period of five year from January 2019 to December 2023 at C.U. Shah Medical College and Hospital, Surendranagar, Gujarat. Results: In this study, most of cases occurred in age group (21-40) years (52%) and showed male predominance. Lepromatous leprosy (26.6%) was the most common histopathological type of leprosy. Maximum clinicopathological correlation seen in HL (100%) and LL (95%). Discussion: There was complete agreement between the clinical and histopathological diagnosis in 65.3% of the cases. Which was similar to other comparative studies, lies in range of 53.44- 74.47%. Conclusions: Histopathological examination of skin biopsies and clinicopathological correlation both are essential for early and accurate diagnosis and typing of leprosy which is helpful in prevention of deformities and drug resistance by early and appropriate treatment.
