Acetazolamide use in Acute Exacerbation of COPD with Type 2 Respiratory Failure: Case Reports

Background:- Acetazolamide is a diuretic and carbonic anhydrase inhibitor medication used to treat several illnesses. It works to cause an accumulation of carbonic acid by preventing its breakdown. FDA-approved indications include glaucoma, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, congestive heart failure, altitude sickness, periodic paralysis, and epilepsy. In addition, it is used off-label for central sleep apnea, Marfan syndrome, prevention of high-dose methotrexate nephrotoxicity, and prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy. Method:- In this study we discussed 3 cases of Acute Exacerbation of COPD with type 2 respiratory failure admitted at Critical care unit Apollo Hospital Bilaspur, These patient were started on acetazolamide 250mg bd along with other supportive treatment. Conclusion:- Acetazolamide appears to improve hypoxemic and hypercapnic COPD patients without any side effects on short term therapy in exacerbation cases along with other supportive treatment.
