Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) has led to an increasing number of devices being connected to the internet, including low-cost microcontroller-based devices such as the ESP32. These devices are often used to collect and transmit sensitive data, making the security of the communication between the device and a remote server a critical concern. In this research program, we will investigate the security of the communication between ESP32-based IOT devices and remote servers using the WiFiClientSecure library. We will analyze different methods for verifying the server's SSL certificate, such as comparing the fingerprint of the certificate and testing the ESP32's ability to detect and respond to man-in-the-middle attacks. The results of this research will be used to identify and evaluate the most effective methods for securing communication between ESP32-based IOT devices and remote servers and provide practical recommendations for securing such communication in real-world scenarios.
