Abstract: In order to interrogate the strong and complex network of existential veins, an attempt to comprehend a syntagmatic and paradigmatic study of the text Yayati using the anthropological Semiotic Model that first emerged through the rigorous praxis of H.S Gill during 1976-79( Structuralism and Literary Critique" in The Semiotics of Conceptual Structures) has been conducted. The semiotic approach helps in acknowledging every incident as the most significant which works as an important instrument in the building of the final discourse. Taking together such valuable units as ensembles, sub-ensembles and further micro units it eventually combines to give the total structure of the text. At the Semiotic level, different and unique dialectics of form as codes of social stratification and induction to creative activity in social milieu is analysed. The Semiological significance emerges at the level of content. Further the orders of signification called denotation and connotation combine to produce the third order of ideological mediation. The play Yayati is analysed taking into context the Hindu mythology and precisely the ancient times of Mahabharata. The references of mythic examples of Savitri, Sisyphus, Antigone and further the comparisons to King Lear are included in Mediation. The protagonist layati moves from resisting any responsibility for his actions to acknowledge his true freedom forwards Sartrean issue of freedom and responsibility. With the help of Vedantic knowledge and existentialism, the theme of life in death and death in life is discussed. While taking Varna system of epic times of the Mahabharata, the orthodox views regarding the superiority of one caste on the other is exposed. The semiotic analysis of the times of Mahabharata itself involves incoherence, ambiguities and silences which offer leverage points for potential social change.
