Abstract: Laparotomy is one of the most common encountered procedure in Chengalpattu medical college hospital. This study involves usage of skin staplers , sutures for emergency laparotomies .AIM OF STUDY:to compare wound infection/ discharge, to compare wound cosmesis and post operative pain. In prospective observational study conducted in department of general surgery ,chengalpattu medical college with the aim of comparing skin suture /stapler for emergency laparotomy ,100 patients were enrolled in this study and randomly assigned into group A and B [n-50]. They were compared on the basis of wound infection, wound cosmesis and post operative pain.RESULTS: In comparing skinsutures versus staplers, skin suture have more wound infection , gives ugly scar , wounds closed by staples exhibit a superior resistance to infection than skin wounds closed with sutures In this study, 3 patients[6%] in stapled group had seroma and 14 patients[28%] in sutured group had seroma. The P value was found to be 0.0027[<0.05] and was statistically significant. CONCLUSION - conclude that skin staplers are superior to sutures for better wound cosmesis, in reducing the post operative pain, wound infection, seroma formation and very much significant in saving time for skin closure. Hence this study recommends the use of skin staplers.
