Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a large class of proteins that have been conserved throughout evolution and exist in prokaryote and eukaryote organisms. HSP plays an important role in protein homeostasis. They can be found in all major cellular compartments. The HSP90 family is important in the formation of the steroid receptor complex. The HSP70 family is necessary for protein synthesis, translocation, and folding. The HSP60 family is important in protein stability. Many factors, eg. heavy metals and organic toxic substances, and elevated temperature in all cells are responsible for the formation of these proteins and hence are called stress proteins.
