Abstract: The kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of antiepileptic drug Topiramate [TPM] was investigated in aqueous alkaline medium under pseudo first order condition. The experimental results indicated that the reaction exhibits fractional order concerning Topiramate and first order concerning potassium permanganate [KmnO4]. The reaction stoichiometry shows one mole of amlodipine besylate consumes one mole of potassium permanganate. The effect of temperature on the reaction rate is studied and the activation parameters are calculated and tabulated. A scheme is proposed based on which a reaction mechanism is proposed. LC-MS Technique was used to identify the oxidation product of topiramate. Based on the experimental results, a mechanism is proposed and constant K1, K2 and k3 involved in the mechanism were evaluated. The observed rate constant values and the values calculated by substituting the value K2 = 531.3 k = 0.027 and K1 5.42 x 10-3 are found to be in good accordance with KCal values.
