Design Flexibility, manufacturing process, Laminated composite conical shells
It is common practise in engineering construction to use composite laminates because of its excellent properties, which include having a Great strength to weight ratio as well as a Great stiffness to weight ratio. Composite laminates also provide design flexibility, which is very important. Delamination may result in a significant degradation of the structure. Debonding or separation between individual laminate folds, as occurs often in composite laminates, is referred to as segregation. Delamination may occur during the manufacturing process (for example, due to insufficient weathering or an air trap) or during the servicing process. As a result, nonlinear theories such as Donnell's or Sanders are preferred in this situation. In spite of this, only a few research projects on nonlinear laminated conical composite shells have been carried out, due to the difficulties of developing nonlinear theories of laminated conical composite shells.
