Cadmium based metal organic framework encapsulated with Pd0, Ni0 and Pt0 nanocatalysts for carbon dioxide hydrogenation to formate

Abstract:
The burning of fossil fuels to meet energy demands has resulted in an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere. A cadmium metal-organic framework (MOF1) was synthesized, fully characterized and successfully used as a support for Pd, Ni and Pt nanoparticles to form MOF1/Pd, MOF1/Ni and MOF1/Pt, which were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform Infrared (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) techniques. MOF1/Pd, MOF1/Ni and MOF1/Pt proved highly active in catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to formate selectively. The support, MOF1, could not hydrogenate CO2 to formate whilst MOF1/Pd, MOF1/Ni and MOF1/Pt produced formate in the presence of THF and KOH. The highest TON of 1500 was achieved with MOF1/Pd at 170 oC and TOF of 69 h-1 achieved within 2 h. Formate yield of 98 % was obtained with MOF1/Pd . This work demonstrates that the combination of nanoparticles and MOFs greatly enhances the catalytic activity of the active sites
