Abstract: Phytoplankton are photosynthetic components and autotrophic groups of the plankton community and a key part in ocean, seas and freshwater basin ecosystems. It is a class of microbes responsible for driving major carbon cycle in oceans, responding to environmental changes and freshwater influx during monsoons. Microalgae or microphytes are an autotrophic photosynthetic phytoplankton in global aquatic ecosystems. Microorganisms hold the key for primary production by photosynthesis in many aquatic ecosystems, among which microalgae play the major role. They are anciently identified, abundant and diverse photosynthetic eukaryotes which are considered as promising cell factories for the ecological production of chemicals. Therefore, such planktonic microalgae are isolated from Singanallur lake in this study. They can live in broad varieties of environment and can rely on variety of substrates. Many of them have the ability to fix nitrogen. Isolation and cultivation are done in Blue Green 11 (BG11) agar media plates with uninterrupted light exposure for 20 days. The morphological differences in different isolated microalgae are identified and examined by bright field microscopy. Single colony is transferred into liquid medium and allowed to grow. Growth experiments are performed in the presence of different nitrogen sources followed by antibacterial activity determination of the extract. Being a rich source of proteins, they will make a good food supplement to human.
Keywords: Singanallur lake, Chlorella vulgaris, antibacterial, nutritional, food supplement.
