Abstract: In this paper the study of the behaviour and optimal design of two types of reinforced concrete walls of varying heights namely cantilever retaining wall and Counterfort cantilever retaining wall. Cost against each optimal design of wall for all height is individually calculated by using the volume of concrete and the amount of steel. Amidst the cost estimates of all the all optimal designs for each height, a comparative study is carried out and the alternative with the least cost estimate is chosen as the best design solution. To study the response of cantilever and Counterfort retaining walls subjected to lateral earth pressure. Two retaining walls with different height of both the walls cantilever retaining with and without surcharge loading and Counterfort cantilever retaining wall with and without surcharge loading. The lateral displacement, vertical settlement, and stresses developed in each component of both retaining walls will be studied and compared with each other. The choice of the retaining wall based on the economic analysis will also discuss and compare. The behaviour of the cantilever and Counterfort walls subjected to lateral earth pressure for different types of soil under different surcharge loadings at varying heights. Further analysis of the structure is to be carried out using STAAD Pro. Software.
