Abstract: Objective: To screen the anti-candidal property of Dispora cuneiformis against Candida albicans. Methodology: The microalgae sample was collected from fresh water, Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, India. The microalgae was identified as Dispora cuneiformis Green algae, belongs to Coccomyxceae family authenticated by BSI, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The Algae were cultivated in BG11 medium and extracted using methanol by centrifugation technique. Anticandidal activity were carried out using agar diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration assay and minimum lethal concentration assay of methanolic extract were performed against different microorganisms. In addition, the bioactive compounds were separated by column chromatography and then tested for anti-candidal activity. The effective fraction was separated under thin layer chromatography were utilized for the confirmation of compound responsible for the anti-candidal activity. Result and discussion: The anti-candidal activity of Dispora cuneiformis were found to be effective and minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum lethal concentration of this algae were potentially high than standard drugs. The compounds present in the Dispora cuneiformis algae played fabulous role against Candida albicans. The compound separated from the algae can be used as coatings in wound dressing materials, and cloths will be alternative for the synthetically produced chemical compounds as well as play a vital role against superficial microorganisms.
Keywords: Dispora cuneiformis, anti candidal activity, methanol, bioactive compounds, wound dressing.
