Thyroid is a vital endocrine gland, present in the midline of the neck, governing the body iodine levels and also plays major life functions. The thyroid follicles secrete the hormones triiodotironine(T3) and Tetraiodothyronine(T4) or thyroxin. Normal levels of T3 and T4 are 0.15micrograms/decilitre and 8micrograms/decilitre. . Variation in these hormonal levels, both increase and decrease can bring about abnormal clinical manifestations. Increase in the levels of thyroxine causes hyperthyroidism and decrease causing hypothyroidism. These hormonal level variation affecting various metabolic functions also affects the pregnancy of a woman.
