Abstract: The need for lightweight, high performance, structural materials made them attractive candidate for Aerospace, Automotive and Consumer related industries, provided the necessary for the development and emergence of Metal Matrix Composites. The homogenous distribution of the reinforcement is a prime requirement for composite material to optimize its performance. Centrifugal casting can produce different quantity during casting process. In this method, a centrifugal force is applied to a mixture of molten metal and reinforcement particle. The particles are arranged gradually along the radial direction (centrifugal direction) due to the density difference between the molten metal and reinforcement particle. In this project work is aimed towards the development of aluminum based metal matrix composites. Aluminum as matrix material and aluminum oxide particles of mesh size 75µm as reinforcement, processed by centrifugal casting method. The mechanical characterization are to be investigated ie effect of reinforcement particles on mechanical properties at different mould rotation speeds of 1250 and 1500rpm. The detail investigations of microstructure and mechanical properties (tensile strength, hardness, toughness) and tribological characteristics are to be studied. Tensile strength, density and hardness increases significantly with increasing mould rotation speed, and also improvement in the wear resistance of the composite material.
Keywords: MMC’s, Centrifugal casting, hardness testing, specific wear rate for different speeds.
