Abstract: Cefuroxime (Cefuroxime axetil) an oral prodrug shows a bioavailability of 30% to 40% when taken on fasting and 5% to 60% when taken after food. The cefuroxime axetil esterase can hydrolyze cefuroxime axetil to the less absorbable cefuroxime in the stomach lumen and is therefore, suspected as a possible cause of incomplete bioavailability. Which suggests an absorption mechanism through the mucosa with limited capacity. Therefore, in the present study the floating tablet of cefuroxime axetil was prepared to provide a gastro retentive system for controlled release of therapeutically active agent, cefuroxime axetil in upper part of gastro-intestinal tract in the form of floating tablet. The prepared tablet was evaluated for various parameters like hardness, weight variation, thickness, % drug content, % cumulative drug release, ANOVA. From the study it was seen that the formulation F7 shows better floating and controlled release action as compared with other formulation. Therefore it was chosen as the optimized formulation.
