Abstract: Breastfeeding is a mother’s gift to herself, her baby and there is no substitute for mother’s milk. Feeding and eating are areas of occupation that are commonly addressed by occupational therapists in a variety of practice settings. Supporting mothers, infants, and families in feeding and eating is an important part of practice in early intervention and NICU settings, hospital and community-based settings. Occupational therapist also supports mothers with the goal of building and maintaining breastfeeding. Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of Occupational Therapy Intervention on infant breastfeeding problems and level of breast engorgement. Methods: 40 postnatal women who delivered 3-5 days before with complaint of breast engorgement and their babies having problem with breastfeeding were selected for the study. Breast engorgement assessment scale was used to assess the degree of breast engorgement, LATCH Assessment Tool and Infant Breastfeeding Assessment Tool (IBFAT) were used to assess infant breastfeeding problem. The Occupational Therapy intervention contains 4 sessions per week over a period of 4 weeks. Results: Result showed that there was significant improvement in LATCH score and infant breastfeeding (LATCH: t=26.91, p=0.000, IBAT: t=24.36, p=0.000) as well as significant decrease in the symptoms and level of breast engorgement problem (t=33.89, p=0.00) every week. We also found that the duration of breastfeeding was negatively associated with the breast engorgement. Conclusion: Study concluded that Occupational Therapy intervention was effective in improving Infants breastfeeding behavior as well as breast engorgement among the postnatal mothers.
