Abstract:
In this study an attempt is made to analyze the role of women in improving family nutrition and food security at house hold level. Women affect the household's nutrition by acquiring food through work, as well as by preparing it. Thus, their employment, income, and decision-making power vis-a-vis the disposal of their income on the one hand and their ability to cook and serve appropriate quantities of food to individual household members (based on nutritional knowledge and autonomy in 'kitchen" decision making) on the other are important determinants of their nutrition-related roles. Therefore, the performance of these roles is related to women's social and economic status. Women contributes to improve family nutrition is by taking care of their families’ health and development needs. These include, use of different kinds of cooking methods to save and provide maximum nutrients, use of health services for prevention, including immunizations, vitamin A and iron supplements, and growth monitoring; treatment and remedial care; breastfeeding and other feeding practices; and engaging children in activities that stimulate their intellectual and emotional growth and development.
