Abstract:
The objective of research is to minimize the operating temperature of solar panels and to keep the electrical efficiency at sufficient level. Solar system consists of PV modules coupled with heat extracting media such as water or air. Solar PV collectors produces both Thermal energy and Electricity simultaneously. Electrical efficiency of PV systems drops as its operating temperature rises. A mathematical model is developed to determine when to start cooling of the PV panels as the temperature of the panels reaches the maximum allowable temperature. A cooling system has been developed based on water spraying of PV panels. Both models, the heating rate model and cooling rate model both are validate experimentally. Based on this both model it is found that the PV panels yield the highest output energy if cooling of the panel starts when the temperature of the PV panels reaches the maximum allowable temperature of 45 C. The maximum allowable temperature is a compromise temperature between the output energy from the PV panels and the energy need for cooling.
