Abstract: Water is one of the most vital elements, without which we can not imagine the life on earth. Reservoirs play an important role in holding water during floods and releasing the same for various activities like Irrigation, Power generation, Drinking water supply, industrial purposes etc. Thus the Reservoirs reflect significantly on the social and economical development of the country. Sedimentation is one of the most common problems because of which the reservoirs are not serving the intended purposes in full due to loss in their capacities. Tungabhadra project is life line of the states of Karnataka and erstwhile Andhra Pradesh serving 3.5 Lakh Hactares in Karnataka and 1.46 Lakh Hactares in undivided Andhra Pradesh. Because of loss in storage capacity due to sedimentation both the states of Karnataka and undivided Andhra Pradesh are not able to utilize the allocated water of 230 TMcft as per KWDT(Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal) from the project even though the average annual inflow is 358 TMcft, much more than allocated water. The project has a catchment area of 28,519.41 Sq Km, located entirely in Tungabhdra Upper Sub basin. The sedimentation in the project has become alarming as the cost of removing the existing sediment is approximately equal to the cost of constructing another project of the same capacity. The sediment produced in the catchment area is estimated in this paper using Universal Soil Loss Equation.
